Google Business Profile optimization for local advertising

Best Practices Guide: Optimizing Google Business Profile for Paid Ad Success In Local Service Ads Campaigns

Google is moving its local service advertising entirely into the main Google Ads platform. With this upgrade, your Google Business Profile acts as the launchpad for your ads. Moving forward, the Google Ads system will automatically pull your business name, address, reviews, and photos straight from your profile to build your live ads. This shift marks an important opportunity to ensure your Google Business Profile is up to date and optimized. Here’s how to get it done:

Step 1: Clean Up Your Basic Business Information

Google demands a perfect match between your business details and your ads. Any inconsistencies can hurt your ad performance or delay your campaign launch.

  • Check Your NAP (Name, Address, Phone): Make sure your business name, physical address, and phone number exactly match your website and official registration. Do not add extra keywords to your business name, as Google may flag your account.
  • Pick the Perfect Main Category: Choose the most specific primary category for what you do (for example, choose Personal Injury Lawyer instead of just Lawyer, or Plumber instead of Handyman). This tells Google exactly when to show your ad.
  • Fill Out the Services List: Go to your profile’s “Services” section and check off every single task you perform. If you are an HVAC company, make sure individual items like AC Repair and Furnace Installation are explicitly selected.

Step 2: Build Immediate Trust with Searchers

When your ad appears on Google Search or Google Maps, your star rating, review count, and business photos are prominently displayed. Buyers make split-second decisions based on these details.

  • Get to 5 Reviews Minimum: Your ads will look much better and perform significantly better if you have at least 5 positive reviews. If you are below this number, reach out to recent happy customers before turning your ads on.
  • Keep New Reviews Coming: Google prioritizes active businesses. A steady stream of recent reviews matters more than having hundreds of old reviews from years ago.
  • Reply to Everyone: Answer both positive and negative reviews within 24 to 48 hours. It shows potential ad clickers that you are responsive and care about customer service.
  • Ditch the Stock Photos: Google can easily recognize generic internet stock photos, and customers don’t trust them. Upload real, high-quality photos of your branded trucks, your team in uniform, your office, and actual before-and-after work. Aim for at least 20 to 30 real photos.

A few tips worth paying attention to –

Keep an eye out for automated updates

Google may collect information about your business through automated calls, texts, chats, or WhatsApp conversations and use those details to automatically update your Business Profile. You can review what Google has gathered under Edit Profile and Collected Info, including where the information came from and when it was added. Because Google’s automated system may not always get every detail right, make a habit of checking this section and deleting anything that is outdated or inaccurate.
